Transmission Powerline Map

December 29, 2017

Once in a while we'll get a request for a map that deals with something controversial in nature.  A recent map we created illustrates the proposed Cardinal-Hickory Creek high voltage transmission line that, along with its 17-story towers, would run along a 125-mile corridor between Dubuque, Iowa and Middleton, Wisconsin, within environmentally sensitive areas of the Driftless Area of southwestern Wisconsin.

Several groups have come together to oppose proposed 345kV transmission line that would run across multiple rare habitats in and adjacent to the largest contiguous area of fish and wildlife habitat in the Upper Mississippi River basin area.  Not only do they protest the potential harm that the powerline would do to the environment, they stress that the estimated project costs ($500M+), plus financial costs, plus the annual rate of return for the developers, would burden taxpayers over the 30-40 year predicted lifespan of the line...A powerline that they say is truly not needed.
